Understanding the Pros and Cons of Using WordPress Calypso

Posted on by admin

WordPress which was introduced as an open source CMS platform 13 years ago, has become one of the most popular web design solutions for businesses of all types and sizes. Over the years, WordPress has matured from being a basic blogging platform to being a complete website software platform, which can effectively support websites from simple to complex.

WordPress Calypso

Last year WordPress introduced a single page web application, called Calypso, which essentially serves as an open source admin panel, which enables developers and web designers the ability to manage multiple WordPress sites, all from one dashboard. There are a number of pros and cons to using WordPress Calypso, such as:

Pros

• One central hub from which hundreds of WordPress websites can all be managed
• Calypso is fully powered by Javascriptand CSS, which makes page loading faster and more responsive
• The management of plug-ins and updates (including auto updates) is easier
• Saves time when it comes to posting to multiple sites, as posting can all be done from one dashboard
• Access to social analytics is easily accessible via the dashboard
• It is based on open source architecture, enabling users to customize it in any way they wish
• Ability to respond to comments posted to multiple WordPress sites, straight from one central hub
• Manipulating menus (drag, drop and edit) is a snap

Cons

• In order to utilize WordPress Calypso to its fullest potential, the Jetpack plug-in must be installed
• Not all existing themes and plug-ins are compatible with WordPress Calypso
• WordPress Calypso does not support the latest version of Internet Explorer (only supports IE 11 and Edge)
• Developers wishing to use WordPress Calypso will need to have knowledge and skill using JavaScript and REST API
• WordPress Calypso does not work well with self-hosted sites (at the moment)
• Customized themes, built using previous versions of WordPress admin, and custom features built using PHP, will not function well, as WordPress Calypso does not support custom fields, etc.

While WordPress Calypso is in its infancy, it is the start of what appears to be a pivotal change in open source Web design in the future.
