What to do after Installation

WordPress can be downloaded from many hosting websites; therefore it is crucial to configure the settings of your website to prevent your website from hackers. After the initial installation of WordPress go over the set up details to create a unique website.

Create a new user with administrator right:

The first thing you can do is logout from your admin account and login as a new user. Then erase all the links and posts made by the old user. This procedure should be performed to ensure the security of your website. As hackers have the tendency of hacking the database and attacking the site. Deleting the traces of the old user also gives you a clean and empty site to work on.

Remove the default about page:

Create a new about page using your own title and page URL

Change the permalinks:

The best option for permalinks is to use the field “custom structure” and then use /%postname%/ or /%postname%.html. This will give you search engine friendly URLs along with the title and keywords in place.

Need for removal or renaming of the default post category:

Make the main topic of your site to reflect the category you select. Setting up your site’s category as default will make it hard for the audience to find your site in the search engine. Selecting a specific category will help Google obtain the information of your website and display your site in the results of its search engine.

Activate plugins to block comment spam:

You can do this by installing free plugins from trusted host sites. Askimet is a great plugin to protect you against comment spam. Activate and configure the Askimet plugins.

Change the privacy settings:

You can change the image settings of your website for security reasons. To do this go under the settings>Miscellaneous>Store uploads in this folder. To control the way you want to handle comments on any post or links, check the discussion settings. This will give you the option to either disable or enable the comment section. If your website is solely for business purposes that does not have a blog it is best to disable the commenting column.

Install the plugins that you require:

Whatever the purpose of your website might be, it is important to install certain plugins that will help you develop your website better. These plugins will also help in setting up your website to the way you want it to function.

Install a new theme:

You can either buy a WordPress premium theme or use a free WordPress theme to suit your site. After you have installed the new theme, you can customize the functions of your sidebar and other elements by placing and configuring those widgets.
